    Verizon: Make Way for ViOS

Verizon: Make Way for ViOS -  First there was FiOS. Now, there's ViOS. In an exclusive LRTV interview taping at Light Reading's Ethernet Expo on Monday, Verizon Business 's VP of Advanced Data and IP Services, Tom Roche, let slip that his company is cooking up a new brand of fiber-based services for business called ViOS -- Verizon Integrated Optical Services.

"What ViOS will provide is a single infrastructure that allows connectivity to our converged packet access switch," Roche says. That access will allow Verizon to provide a number of business services over a managed fiber connection. And, for Verizon, it will build on the success and experience the company has gained since launching its residential fiber access service, FiOS, more than two years ago.

Roche didn't disclose any other details, at the insistence of his PR handlers. And he flubbed a word or two when talking of the timeframe, so we'll have to guess what he really meant. But we'll work to ferret out the details as they become available.

BT Voted ISP of the year!

BT Total Broadband has been voted the internet service provider (ISP) of the year in the annual MacUser Awards.

It saw off competition from the other shortlisted companies - Demon, NTL:Telewest, Pipex and Zen Internet - to win the title, presented by MacUser and voted for by readers of the magazine.

It is the first award for BT Total Broadband since its launch in July. BT will highlight the recognition in a national press advertising campaign for the product this weekend, under the banner: We have always believed we were the number one internet service provider. Now it appears we are not the only ones.

:: Voice Over IP (US) ::

:: Verizon VoiceWing - Voice Over IP ::

There are so many advantages to using VoiceWing for your calling needs that we felt inclined to point them out. In addition to all the features jam-packed into this service, you can also take your phone number wherever you go, make calls from anywhere and access your online Personal Account Manager  as long as there is a broadband connection. So no matter how far away from home you may be, the convenience of calling from home doesn't have to be.

How it works: VoiceWing uses a new technology called Voice over Internet Protocol VoIP that sends calls over an Internet connection instead of a traditional telephone network. Translation--you get to enjoy surfing the Internet and talking on the phone at the same time.

For more information on Verizon's VoiceWing or to signup, click hereverizon voip

To use VoiceWing, you will need:

    • DSL or cable Internet connection

    • Regular household telephone

    • Home networking router

    • Telephone adapter, which will be provided to you at no charge

If you wish to use more than one phone on your VoiceWing line, you will need to purchase an expandable cordless phone system.

    Why VoiceWing...

    • Area code - Choose any area code you want because your VoiceWing phone number doesn't correspond to a physical location.

    • Caller ID History - View every call you've made or received through your online Personal Account Manager. And unlike a traditional phone, you can drag and drop all those phone numbers into your VoiceWing address book!

    • Online Voice Mail - Listen to your voice mail over the Internet using audio or .wav files. The best part is that you can choose which messages you want to listen to by a quick glance instead of having to go through every single one.

    • Mobility - Use your VoiceWing service whenever you travel in the United States by plugging your adapter into a DSL or cable modem broadband connection. VoiceWing cannot provide service in all locations in the United States. VoiceWing can only provide service in locations where it can provide E911 or Basic 911 Service.

    • Phone Bill - Review an itemized list of calls made and received.

    • Easy Installation - Set up your service in a snap with no special software.

    ::Industry News:: July 2005

Telephony... Broadband wireless is starting to gain traction among the Tier 1 U.S. carriers, as three of the industry's wireline powerhouses announced plans to launch commercial pilots of the technology, many of them using the new WiMAX gear currently awaiting certification.

AT&T - In the fourth quarter, AT&T is launching a commercial trial in Atlanta using pre-certified gear from multiple WiMAX vendors. AT&T also launched a technical trial in Middleton, N.J.

BellSouth - BellSouth is expanding its broadband wireless trial using Navini Ripwave gear to Athens, Ga., and two Florida communities by the end of the year.

Qwest Communications - In the fourth quarter, Qwest is planning to launch a trial in a community near Denver using an unspecified vendor's kit.

Verizon Avenue - Verizon's alternative access subsidiary Verizon Avenue launched a trial broadband wireless network in Grundy, Va., last year using Alvarion's BreezeAccess gear. Though Verizon owns WCS spectrum it chose to use unlicensed frequencies for the trial.
